The Vietnamese scenery was wonderful |
In May and June of 2014, we left Ocelot in a marina near Singapore and traveled overland to Laos and Vietnam. This let the monsoon season change from NE to SW winds, so the winds would be more settled by the time we got back.
Air Asia had great discounted flights during the hot, off‑season, and we took advantage of them to fly from Johor Bahru (southern Malaysia) to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. From there we traveled by bus and then river boat deep into northern Laos and Vietnam.

We entered Vietnam by road, over the recently opened pass from Muang Khua, Laos, to Dien Bien Phu, in northwestern Vietnam. We had only 2 weeks to see this diverse and lengthy country, and we chose to spend our time in the northern third or so, aiming for places of physical beauty. We were not returning veterans, nor were we particularly interested in the Vietnam version of the history of the “American War.” It was the hot season, so we also sought the mountains for their more favorable climate. We flew back to Malaysia from Hanoi after a fabulous month of adventures.
