What is Cruising? This is the term we sailors use to describe the lifestyle of living aboard a sailboat and traveling, by sailing ourselves over the sea, to all parts of the globe. It has nothing to do with being a passenger on a cruise ship! (Google notwithstanding) "Cruisers" are the people who embark on this lifestyle. We also fondly call ourselves "yachties" although many of us would refute the use of the word "yacht" to describe our sailboats. The term "yacht" somehow implies mega-fancy, expensive toys belonging to billionaires who don't work on their own boats (which all of us certainly do!). Humorists Henry Beard and Roy McKie, in their delightful sailing dictionary "Sailing", define the term yacht, in part, as a word used by sailors "to describe their vessel to persons who have never seen it and are never likely to do so."
So, if you're a cruiser yourself, or a wannabe sailor/cruiser, this section is for you!
Cruisers: We are now publishing Track Files in both MaxSea (.ptf) format and in OpenCPN (.gpx) format for other cruisers to download. If you have track files you'd like to share, please email them to us (as attachments to our HackingFamily account, not our Winlink acct) along with your boat name and draft and we will post them so other cruisers can download them.
The Cruising Information section was getting too big and complicated so we decided to break it into different sections, divided mainly by ocean. This section is for non-location specific information. We currently have pages on:
|NEW! Track Files||- Track, waypoint, & route files to download & import|
|2-Handed Cruising||- Sue's article on how our cruising changed when the kids left|
|Why Sail a Catamaran||- All the top reasons to cruise on a cat|
|Cruising with Teens||- What we've seen that works, and what doesn't|
|Frequently Asked Questions||- FAQs from the many folks who've emailed us|
|Cruising Expenses||- A bit out of date, but a first swing|
|Cruising Links||- Links to other cruiser's websites (below)|
Here is a list of links to other cruising websites, mostly put together by cruising friends of ours. They should open in a new window (or tab) so this window will remain open and you can easily get back here.
