Choosing the right equipment for your cruising home is extremely important. Good equipment can help make cruising comfortable and safe, while poor equipment (or lack of certain equipment) can ruin much of the enjoyment of cruising, and can potentially be quite dangerous. And money is always important, as most cruisers have limited income while cruising, so getting good value for money is crucial.
After more than 15 years of live-aboard cruising, plus many months spent on other private and charter boats, we have some thoughts on equipment! If you're thinking of buying a boat for the first time, or if you're re-fitting a boat, or if you're just wondering about upgrading your present equipment, you're facing a sometimes bewildering variety of choices, as well as the ever-present question: "Is this (expensive) equipment really necessary?"
These pages are to help people decide not only what equipment they would like to have on their boat, but also, where our experience allows, to help decide between the often bewildering choices of brands. Like many other boat owners, we have considerable experience with the equipment that came with the boat, and especially with that we chose to add. And while we don't have all the information on all the brands and models of boating equipment, we'd like to share what we do know.
Where we've been able to test the equipment ourselves, this section will function as a performance review section, with our reasons for making the choices we did, as much factual information as we can put in, and our opinions of how well the gear performed. While the list of possible cruising gear is almost infinite, the list below is what we'll start with initially. Of course, this is just a first cut and will always be changing.
