Maldives Arrival
Saturday, 31 March 2007, Gan Island, Addu Atoll, Maldives
Our pretty anchorage off Equator Village, with Estrela |
Dear Friends and Family,
Just a quick note to let you know we arrived safely. The winds died down quite a bit at the end so it made for a fairly slow passage - just over 600 nautical miles in almost exactly 5 days, for an average speed of 5 knots.
The word Atoll is actually a Maldivian word that's been adopted by the rest of the world. We came through the reef passage (called a kandu here) into the Addu Atoll a bit before 2pm and were safely anchored by 3pm. We caught a nice barracuda as we came through the kandu which we shared tonight with a Dutch boat we first met in Sri Lanka. Customs has yet to clear us in, but it's a 3-day public holiday here (Mohammed's birthday). Hopefully we'll get through officialdom quickly so we can get out and explore.
